Asia Cup Winners 1984 2023

Asia Cup 2025 is just a couple of months away. The multi-nation tournament will serve as a preparation ground for the 2026 T20 World Cup, scheduled to be played in India and Sri Lanka early next year.

In this article, we will look at the complete list of teams that have won the Asia Cup.

Asia Cup Winners: 1984-2023

India (8 Times)

India holds the record for winning the Asia Cup the most number of times. The Men in Blue have been crowned as the champions of Asia on eight occasions.

The domination started with the inaugural edition of the tournament in 1984, where the then World Cup winners defeated Sri Lanka in the final. That particular edition of the tournament took place in the UAE.

The Indian team, led by Sunil Gavaskar, defeated Sri Lanka, who were considered an underdog at that time and were led by Duleep Mendis. It was a three-team tournament with Pakistan being the third nation.

India made a strong comeback by winning three titles on the trot in 1988, 1990, and 1995 after missing the Asia Cup of 1986 due to some off-field incidents.

India was captained by Dilip Vengsarkar and Mohammad Azharuddin in these particular editions of the Asia Cup, respectively.

It seemed like India had cracked the code of winning the Asia Cup, having won all four editions that they were a part of till 1995, but that wasn’t the case for the next 15 years.

India were not able to cross the line in three of the next four editions in 1997, 2004, and 2008, and finished second after failing to get the better of Sri Lanka on all three occasions.

While they were below par in terms of their performance in the seventh edition held in 2000, the team couldn’t make it to the final.

However, things appeared to be changing when the team under the leadership of MS Dhoni clinched the 2010 Asia Cup title in Dambulla.

But that success was short-lived as the defending champions were knocked out in the first round of the tournament in 2012, which included a defeat against Bangladesh as well, which was followed by a shocking exit from the next edition in 2014.

Things have been pleasant for the most successful team in the tournament since then, as they have won three of the last four editions in 2016, 2018, and 2023, respectively.

Sri Lanka (6 Times)

Sri Lanka is the second most successful team as far as winning the Asia Cup is concerned. The island nation has won the tournament on six occasions.

Sri Lanka won its first Asia Cup title in 1986 when it was played in Sri Lanka, with Bangladesh being drafted as the third team.

The 1996 World Cup champions had to wait for quite a while before tasting success for the second time, and they did so just a year after winning their maiden ODI World Cup.

Sri Lanka team continued their dominance in Asia at the turn of the millennium, only to fall short in the final of the 2000 Asia Cup against a strong Pakistani side.

Having said that, the Mahela Jayawardene-led side made a strong comeback and won the next edition in 2004 after defeating India in a low-scoring thriller, and defended their title against the same opposition in 2008.

Sri Lanka has had different players who have put their hands up and delivered a title-winning performance for the team on each of the six occasions.

The 2004 Asia Cup saw the emergence of Lasith Malinga, a fast bowler with an unusual bowling action. Although Malinga missed the final of that tournament, but was here to stay due to his performance throughout the tournament.

As far as the 2008 tournament is concerned, it was a one-man show in the final courtesy of Ajantha Mendis. The mystery spinner decimated the Indian batting lineup to help Sri Lanka defend their title.

It was in the years 2014 and 2022 that Sri Lanka surprised everyone by clinching their last two Asia Cup titles, as many experts haven’t given the team any chance of reaching the final, let alone winning it.

Pakistan (2 Times)

The young generation might find it hard to believe, but it’s a fact that Pakistan were not able to win a single Asia Cup title for 16 years, given the quality of players they had at their disposal.

It was in the year 2000 that Pakistan, under the leadership of wicketkeeper batter Moin Khan, were crowned the champions of Asia after getting rid of Sri Lanka in the final played in Dhaka.

Pakistan in that tournament played like a well-rounded unit as it had a good blend of youth and expierence.

The eventual champions had the likes of Moin Khan, Wasim Akram, Inzamam-ul-Haq, who had the expierence, and Shahid Afridi, Imran Nazir, and Azhar Mahmood, who had the exuberance of youth.

Having said that, as has been the case with Pakistan over the years, the team was not able to make it to the final in the next three editions and had to wait till 2012 to lift their second title.

Pakistan piped home side Bangladesh in a last-ball thriller by two runs after posting a below-par total courtesy of a spirited bowling performance from the bowlers, led by Aizaz Cheema, who bowled the final over.
